"Comtoise clocks were constructed on iron-strip frames in the style of Gothic clocks. Originally designed to have a full long case, they were mostly made of pine and bared a violin shaped or tapering side and were grained and painted in the country manner. The earliest dials were executed in brass or pewter consisting of a single hand and black numerals.
