English Victorian Mother of Pearl and Tortoise Shell Calling Card Case
This is a stunning mother of pearl and tortoise shell calling card case, made in England in the 1860s. The mother of pearl has a lustrous and glowing patina, with lovely iridescent highlights to the nacre. It covers both sides of the case and is expertly inlaid with tortoise shell, creating a decorative lattice pattern. The case also features a serpentine border of tortoise shell.
This case is in very good condition, especially considering its age. Both the push button catch and the hinge are in excellent working order and the inside is lined with its original brown velvet lining. There is a small chip in the tortoise shell border (see photos), but that does not take away from the beauty of this Victorian piece.
It measures 3 5/8" x 2 5/8" x 1/2".
