Rare Victorian John Round & Sons Ltd Sterling Silver Apostle Tea Spoon Set in Original Box

A handsome sterling silver tea serving set composed of 6 tea spoons, one tea-straining spoon, and a sugar tongs presented in their original purple velvet lined box. Originally retailed at Howard & Co. Fifth Ave. New York, the sterling silver set has an apostle figure ornamentation at finial, with a nice gold wash in the bowl of each spoon. The set is made by John Round & Son Ltd. in the Apostles pattern that was very popular in England, and originally dates to the mid 1800s. The figure represented on the finial could be Saint Paul or Saint Matthew. In this set, the apostle figure holds a book and the same apostle is represented in each spoon.
Every item is marked with the British Sterling Silver mark, or lion passant, JR mark representing John Round & Son Ltd., a Sheffield hallmark, the Assay office marks, L for the date mark of 1878, Queen Victoria, which is the duty mark. The spoons measure 4 inches each, the tea straining spoon measures 3.5 inches, and the tongs measure 4 inches. The tongs are especially remarkable for their attention to detail; they have apostle figures not only at the arch but also faces, that appear to be angeles, decorate both sides of the tong near the bowl. The tea-strainer is equally considered, with a nice reticulated floral motif that is at the bowl of the spoon. Total weight of the set is 123 grams or 3.9 troy ounces. The set is in great condition, especially for its age. No dents or scratched on the silver. Two spoons have minor spots on the inside of gilt wash of spoon, but this is barely visible to the eye and does not detract from the beauty of this set. Presentation box measures approximately 7 by 7 inches. Perfect for an elegant afternoon of drinking tea, indulging the old fashioned way.
