New England “Flame stitch” Sewing Case, 18th Century
New England 18th century silk Bargello or flame stitch sewing case with tasseled ties to keep closed. This sewing case is unusual in the fact that there are two different styles of stitching, diagonal stitching down the center and traditional flame stitch around the outside. Stitched on canvas in silk threads and lined on the inside with green silk indicating this item belonged to a woman of means. Three embroidered felted flaps inside for holding needles and pockets for holding threads, fully hand stitched.
