English Carved Oak Fireplace Bellow, circa 1840
Listed here is a very early English Bellow. It's 25 1/2 inches long, 11 1/2 wide, and 2 inches wide. It is made of wood, and all hand carved though out the piece. On the front side, there are quite a few things going on in the carvings. The top features a full length man. Just below him is a carved face, and in the middle there is a young boy with a crown on his head, a scepter in his hand and he is riding some type of buggy. There are berries carved with leaves, and on the sides there are faces carved with attached wings. Notice also that the back side has carvings on it. This was a very elaborate bellow, and would of been used by someone with a lot of wealth. The middle of the below has leather which was attached so air could be compressed when pumping it. Bellows have been used for years. A bellows is a device constructed to furnish a strong blast of air. The simplest type consists essentially of a flexible bag comprising a pair of rigid boards with handles joined by flexible leather sides enclosing an approximately airtight cavity which can be expanded and contracted by operating the handles, and fitted with a valve allowing air to fill the cavity when expanded, and with a tube through which the air is forced out in a stream when the cavity is compressed.
