Antique Ivory & Horn Snuff Mull from Scotland
This is a fantastic Scottish snuff mull from the Victorian era made from a horn and fitted with a perfectly working ivory lid. This snuff mull dates back to the 1860's. Snuff mulls from Scotland such as this one were traditionally made of a ram’s horn, the point of which was heated and curled into a tight scroll to keep it from rubbing a hole in the pocket. The horn has a fine polished finished so that it is very smooth and remains in great condition, which is quite remarkable for its age. There are no cracks on the mull and the ivory lid fits perfectly into its ivory rim. On the lid we can see the original owner's initials have been carefully hand etched- the letters N and M. The mull is 3 1/4 inches long with a lid that has a diameter of 1 1/2 inches. Usually snuff mulls were made with silver clasp lids, making this particular one with an ivory top quite rare. This ivory and horn mull will add flare to your snuff mull collection; it also makes a really great conversational piece for an antique collection.
