Oak Three Bottle Liquor Tantalus, Lock & Key

(Great Britain, 19th Century)

Oak Three Bottle Liquor Tantalus, Lock & Key

A fine, 19th-Century oak tantalus bound with brass. The front has carved oak leaves around the lock. It retains the three original heavy, cut crystal decanters and their stoppers. The key locks the case securely. It would be a lovely addition to a collection or gift. A nice one in very good condition.

"Tantalus, the mortal son of Zeus and Pluto was committed to the underworld for angering the gods. His punishment was to stand knee deep in water with fruit growing above him. Whenever he tried to eat or drink, the fruit and water withdrew from reach. From Tantalus, we get the verb, 'tantalize'."
