Shibiyama Ivory Magnifying Glass with Bugs

A simple and beautiful ivory magnifying glass from Japan, with an inlaid decoration of three beetles at its end. Shibiyama is a Japanese family name now used to describe ivory inlaid with mother of pearl or hardstone. The bodies of the insects are a variety of attached gem stones. Each beetle's legs or antennae have been hand painted by singular brush strokes. But in the middle part of the 19th century, the feudal system collapsed in Japan and these craftsmen lost their jobs. What they started to do was make objects or okimono like this. It is quite an old piece, over 100 years old, but remains in great condition.
