Carved Round Textured Ivory Diptych from Dieppe France
Ivory diptych from Dieppe, France. Dieppe was a large center of ivory trade because much of the ivory from Africa was imported to this coastal region. The external of the piece is carved to look like turtle shell or a stone wall. The "stone" opens into a diptych of cherubs and a maiden with the other side showing the guards at the tomb of Jesus. The guards stand blindly by as Jesus rise from the dead. The piece is carved beautifully and has the original hinge, in very good condition, with aging to the Ivory that dates it to the 1800's
