Beautiful and Rare Klinger Student Pocket Globe, circa 1850
A fantastic and unique hand made pocket globe by Johann Georg Klinger that dates to 1850. This pocket globe comes inside of a small wooden box that has an interior scene on the lid, of a family or group of children reading maps and studying a globe at the center of a table. The globe inside of the small box is made on a solid sphere, with two brass axis pins, and can be taken out of its display and storage box. The globe rests on metal pinions at either pole in a full horizon band with engraved paper calendar and zodiac. The globe is perfectly fitted and spins. It is quite old and the counties and masses of land, as well as bodies of water have names different to those we know today: The Antarctic is called " Icy Sea " with coastline shown for Wilkes Land; Australia is called New Holland; Tasmania (V. Diemans L.) is drawn as an island. Klinger began producing globes in 1790 in Nuremberg and became the founder of a prolific globe making enterprise that exported globes to many countries, and printed globes in different languages . This pocket globe has the words: Die Erd; The World (both the German and the English language) printed on the lid. Most likely used by students in England, this pocket globe is in great condition for its age. Its a wonderful addition to a collection of antiquities, or maps and makes a great conversation piece. The globe is 1 5/8" in diameter with the wooden box being 3" x 3" x 2 1/4".
