French Andirons, Pair of Curvy, Rococo Chenets
A chic vintage pair of French andirons to light up a fireplace, whether there is a blaze or not. This pair is good-sized but not huge - a bit taller than we usually see in French chenets. They are brass with remnants of gilding, The back shows some brass-plated white metal elements. They have a nice patina with the worn over-gilding, and a feeling of age on their surfaces. More intricately formed than others we have found in the past two years. Sturdy and sound condition.
Back supports are iron, attached by modern screws and can swing into various positions to fit your fireplace. Bright gilding on the back indicates these were seldom if ever in front of a fire. You could go either way - put them in an unused fireplace to brighten the space, or use them with wood fires.
We love the foliate and scroll forms which suggest flames, as well as French style. We estimate they are from about 1900.
