19th Century Karelian Birch Tree Box with Bronze Medallion
This masterfully made hand-carved Karelian Birch tree box has a circular form with lift up lid that features a golden bronze medallion of William IV (King of Great Britain, 1830-1837) on the top. the portrait image is in profile, with the text "William the fourth" written around him. The medallion is bezel set and measures 1 ⅞". It is covered with a protective concave glass surface. The birch wood box was made in the early 19th Century and today remains beautifully polished. It is really a remarkable selection of wood, as is most visible at the base of the box. The grain or the burl and its colors take organic swirling forms that complement the hand-made qualities of this box. The wood has moved with its age, adding natural beauty to the box. The lid still fits perfectly, and the faux tortoise lining inside has a nice glow. The box is 2 ⅞" x 1", and is unsigned. This box makes a wonderful piece for a collection and for someone with refined taste as well as appreciation for fine craftsmanship.
