French Limoges Enamel Portrait of St. Fabiola in Bronze Frame
This is an exquisitely painted enamel portrait on copper of Saint Fabiola from Limoges, France. It was painted by G. Liebert in the first quarter of the 20th century, after the 1885 original by Jean-Jacques Henner (French, 1829-1905). This iconic image of Saint Fabiola was one of the most popular of the late 19th and early 20th century, although Henner's original painting was lost in 1912. This particularly lovely rendition is presented in a gilt-bronze frame with taupe grosgrain facing, gilt-bronze floral spandrels and swags, a beaded edge and beribboned laurel cresting. The enamel on this painting displays rich, vibrant colors; her hood and the background are a deep, blood red that is captivating to look at.
The frame measures 5" x 5/8" x 6 1/2". The portrait itself measures 2 5/8" x 2 5/8". It is marked in the lower right hand corner: "G. Liebert."
