Vintage 1930s terracotta holy water baptismal font made by the well-known terracotta producer “Manifattura di Signa” in Tuscany. The round basin is decorated with scenes of the holy family, a baptism, and symbolic peacocks, along with leaves and scrolling vines. The elaborate decoration continues on the column with geometric patterns and four turtles standing above the square base. The base is stamped with the round Manifattura di Signa mark as well as “Made in Italy” and the number “508.”
Manifattura di Signa began production in the late 19th century specializing in artistic terracotta statuary and reproduction of classical vases and plaques. During WWII, the company ceased terracotta production.
There is a hairline crack in the basin where it appears water used to leak as evidenced by some calcium deposits. This font should be kept indoors and would make a lovely indoor plant stand.
