Early 20th Century Cast Bronze Lion Sculpture
A regal cast bronze lion sculpture, reminiscent of Antoine Bayre's animal sculptures, unsigned. Antoine Bayre was a French Animalier from the 19th Century Romantic Period. Although this piece is not signed by him it is reminiscent of those animal sculptures of that era. Animaliers were artists, mainly from the 19th century, who specialized in realistic portrayal of animals. The regal lion depicted here is almost crouching. He has some nice detail on his face, including teeth, whiskers, and beautiful textures all around the mane. The lion's inquisitive expression is remarkably realistic. The muscles on his back and rear legs have great three dimensionality. Even the ground that he is walking on has some textures. Overall the piece has a great patina, with some nice golden highlights. The lion would make a very elegant decorative object, for a work desk or in a study. It is quite a solid piece of bronze, with some weight the lion is a solid piece that is attached to the base with screws. The lion sculpture measures 8-3/4 long by 4-1/4 wide by 4-1/2 inches tall. Early 20th century.
