Rare Scottish Ram Snuff Mull, 1797
This is a rare, antique snuff mull made from the horn of a ram in Scotland, with a sterling silver rim and lid decoration. This snuff mull is a real beauty, over 200 years old and still in wonderful condition. It has nice bright cut work around the silver rim and on the lid, also made of horn, is a etched silver Scottish National flower of the thistle, with the name and date: A.Gun 1797 just under it. The thistle is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility of character as well as of birth, for the wounding or provocation of a thistle yields punishment. The sterling silver decorations are in great shape and very nicely etched. On the side of the horn there is also a small silver shield that is unmarked, ready for a monogram, or for a new owner's initials. The snuff mull was traditionally carried by men in the Scottish countryside and was a highly valued decorative item. To create this snuff mull the horn of the ram was hollowed and heated, then shaped and curled into its dramatic form. The snuff mull opens and closes perfectly. The inside still has its original cork fitting, and the wax on the inside lid is also original. This item is rare for its age, and it is also unique for its beauty. Every snuff mull was made for an individual, and the great condition of this item shows us the previous owner took great care of this object. The snuff mull is 3 inches long by approximately 1.5 inches at its widest point. Its a wonderful conversation piece and can also still be used to carry tobacco.
