Charles X Period Pair Bronze and Brass Andirons, France c.1835
Charles X Period Pair Bronze and Brass Andirons, France c.1835. These andirons each have a beautifully decorative profile to them that is visible whether a fire is blazing in the hearth or not. Please enlarge the additional photographs to see the details that make these andirons very desirable fireplace essentials. The spire on each andiron is made of bronze with a perforated surface both on the upper sphere as well as the longer mid section. Topped with a solid finial each andiron has an openwork circular section divided into eight parts with an open space between each rib. Each of the ribs are decorated with a symmetrical design deeply incised into the surface while the elongated mid section features a pair of feathered designs flanking the open areas. The elaborate quality of the upper vertical spires contrasts in quite a handsome manner with the solid scrolled bases that each stand upon a pair of spherical brass feet. The elegant sweep of the scrolled curves is reminiscent of designs invented during the Regence period in France (1715-1723) and are architectural in their references while the vertical spires recall the designs developed during the reign of Henri II (1547-1559). The gleam of the bronze and brass creates a luxurious effect and focuses attention on the opening of the fireplace. The purpose of andirons is to elevate the logs so air may freely circulate to keep the logs blazing as well as to make it easier when sweeping out the ashes.
