Georgian Tortoise Shell and Horn Snuff Box with Stylized Flowers
A lovely tortoise shell lid box with hoof base, hand carved and shaped into a snuff box. The hinges are made out of horn, and the base was carved out of a single piece of the same material. Gold twisted wire was used to create the stem of the flower detail and silver was used to make the stylized flowers and other geometric designs on the lid. The tortoise shell piece that is on the top lid is backed by horn material also, creating a slight organic curve to the rectangular box. Its a nice sized box for pills on other tiny items, and can be used also for its original purpose, to carry snuff, or tobacco. The snuff box measures 3 x 1.5 x almost 1 inch high. Opens and closes perfectly, no nicks to the organic material or horn or shell, but a small petal or silver inlay is missing from one of the flowers on the lid. This missing piece does not detract from the beauty of this box. Popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras, snuff boxes were a thing of beauty and function, indicating social status and intimate personal property. The tortoise shell and horn were especially popular in England and the special snuff boxes were carried around in the shirt pocket, a valuable portable item to keep close and on hand at all times.
