Georgian Tortoise Shell & Ivory Box with Silver Piping
A lovely hand-crafted tortoise shell box with curving edges highlighted with ivory interior. The small tortoise shell box dates to the late Georgian, late Victorian era, when these boxes were very popular in England. The tortoise shell enamel selected in the construction of this piece has a really wonderful pattern, and a nice selection of blonde tones. The shell and the ivory are both in excellent condition which is remarkable for their age. This box is quite a gem. It has silver lining in between the tortoise shell panels. It makes the perfect container for personal items or pieces of jewelry. The interior has its original lining in a regal blue purple velvet fabric. This shows some wear for its age but its still intact. What makes this box so special is not only the skilled craftsmanship, the making of the curved lid and corners with the tortoise shell, but also the added hand-made elements like the ivory, which you can tell were meticulously formed to fit with the soft edges of the box. Every detail is considered, even the angle between the lid and the base. Open and closes like new. Measures 4 inches wide by 1.5 inches deep by 2.25 inches tall.
