Italian Pietra Dura Jewelry Box

Featured here is a large inlayed Pietra Dura Jewelry box. It's flair incorporates precious and semi-precious stones. This panel is completely flat. As you can see from the top view, it is of a black marble cut and shaped. The orange, and blue colors, create the flower design and are inlayed in. On the sides the flower design are put in pots to depict growth. This box is considered a jewelry box, or some call it a jewelry casket. It is 11 1/2 inches across , 8 inches tall, and 7 1/2 inches in depth. There are 6 inlayed flowers on the top art that inlayed in carved, or cut out wood. On the sides notice the architecture arches. This shows style and class, perhaps a design after a building in Florence Italy where this was most likely made. There is a key that can lock this box. People often had staff, and didn't want people getting into their jewelry. On the inside of the box there is a tan wood shelf with 4 slots. The shelf is 8 inches across, 4 inches wide, and 1 3/4inches deep. Notice the square pegs on the joints of the fame. Below the tray is an empty space where larger items can be placed. The bottom on the underside you will find 4 ,1 1/2 inch feet. This give the box a lift and keeps it from laying flat. It looks like round dowels were used to secure the round feet into the base of the box.

Commentary

"Pietra dura or pietre dure, is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. The stonework, after the work is assembled loosely, is glued stone-by-stone to a substrate after having previously been "sliced and cut in different shape sections; and then assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section was practically invisible".[1] Stability was achieved by grooving the undersides of the stones so that they interlocked, rather like a jigsaw puzzle, with everything held tautly in place by an encircling 'frame'. Many different colored stones, particularly marbles, were used, along with semiprecious, and even precious stones. It first appeared in Rome in the 16th century, reaching its full maturity in Florence. This piece came from a well known estate in Minneapolis, MN"
