Circa 1910 lovely English Edwardian table gong with original striker. It has horns with silver mounts that hold the gong, an oak plinth base and cartouche ready to be engraved. When struck with the striker, it makes a lovely melodious sound. Gongs were traditionally used in the homes of wealthy aristocrats in Victorian and Edwardian England to announce the hour to dress for dinner, then summon the family and guests to dinner. These lovely antique gongs have made quite a comeback recently, courtesy of Downton Abbey! We have one in our dining room and our children and grandchildren love ringing it to announce dinner!
