Antique Equestrian Leather Horse Lawn Slipper / Boot

Antique Equestrian Leather Horse Lawn Slipper / Boot

List Price $725

An antique English Victorian leather horse lawn slipper or boot. This museum quality item is all original and originates from an English estate's golf course. Before the invention of the lawnmower in 1830, grass would be cut with a scythe or animals would be allowed to graze on the lawn to keep it short. From the 1850's, horse or pony drawn mowers were introduced. In order to prevent the horse's hooves from churning up the green, they were outfitted with these lawn slippers so that it could be carefully mowed and rolled. The feet were strapped into the leather overshoe, thus spreading the foot's pressure more evenly. It also prevented the horseshoe imprinting and tearing up the lawn. They are made with thick leather and studs. What a find and an unusual item! We've shown it also as a charming wine bottle holder. It would be a lovely gift for the horse enthusiast! Wine not included.
