A stunning Nautilus Shell Cup in the tradition of 17th Century Wunderkammer objects, made of solid English sterling silver (with gold gilt details, supported by the arms of a figure on a thick agate rock base. The nautilus shell, exotic and highly prized as an object, is adorned with foliage and grapes, framed with a silver sliver where ones lips meet its opening. The greek goddess, raises her bounty of vines entangled in this pearlescent shell exalting the qualities of this piece and its quintessential place in the Wunderkammer, "the cabinet of curiosities, a place for abundance, love for the singular and the uncommon". This beautiful cup has remarkable detail, from the vines around the nautilus, which has a glowing gold gilt interior, to the red garnet grapes, to the sculpted folds in the dress of the figure. It takes its craft from the tradition of 17th Century artisan work, where objects created for the cabinet of curiosities, the personal collection on the Wunderkammer was seen as a microcosm reflecting the macrocosm of the whole world. This cup is a marvel in its skill and for the elements it combines; although constructed in the 1990s this piece is crafted in the long tradition of 17th nautilus shell objects. The cup measures 12.5 inches tall, with a solid agate base that is 7 by 6 inches and 1 inch thick. The shell is in perfect condition, with glowing pearlescent rings, measuring 4.5 by 6 by 3 inches round. The base of the cup has the silver marks of Peter Nicholas, London 1992. Peter Nicholas was a a sought after British modernist designer, making this a rare and desirable piece for ones own personal collection, or cabinet of curiosities.
