Gilt Wash Cast Bronze Lobster Inkwell
Very unique and original-looking lobster inkwell made of bronze, which once had a golden gilt wash. The gilt is faded to reveal a nice brown-bronze look such as a real lobster would have. This final look is great, and beautifully realistic. The top of the lobster head is hinged and opens to reveal a double inkwell. The wells can be removed to add ink, or to clean them. They fit perfectly inside the head of the lobster, all of the lobster parts open and close perfectly. The lobster measures 12-1/2 inches long, 3 inches tall and about 6 inches wide, claws spread out included. It is made entirely of bronze and is very sturdy and well-made. It and sits on a desk quite nicely, slightly suspended by its strong claws and tail. It is quite uncanny- the piece actually looks like a real lobster, not simply for the exact way in which it is rendered but also because of its size. It is marked on the under side of the curled tail with the number 13650 and the letter P. The inkwell dates to the late 19th Century, and is made in England. As a novelty desk item this inkwell-lobster piece can also be used for a paper weight. It would make a very unique gift, great for a collection, or as a conversation piece.
