Early 19th century Flemish Oil On Canvas - Tapestry Study.
In the olden days, when a tapestry was commissioned, a rendering of the scene was prepared in oil on canvas. This Tapestry Study was then presented to the client for approval.
This beautiful painting depicts a hunting party in a castle setting surrounded by cypress trees. The party consists of mounted huntsmen and huntswoman, their footmen along with a falconer, falcons and hunting dogs.
This Tapestry Study is similar to those hanging in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
