Antique Japanese Bronze "Hibachi" circa 1875
This circular bronze container is illustrated with landscape scenes on both sides and possesses a beautiful antique patina. Used primarily for heating a room and as a hand warmer the bronze container was filled with coals at night for warmth. In America Hibachis are thought to be a implement for cooking food but this is not correct. Now these vessels are used primarily as a cachepot (French for hidden pot) to display beautiful plants in an interior. Because the hibachi is finished completely on all sides it is perfect to display upon a table where it may be admired from all directions.
