Victorian Banded Agate Sterling Silver Necklace
An elegant banded agate necklace from the 1880's, made of a polished stone mounted onto a sterling silver back, on a decorated sterling necklace. The necklace hangs low, but can be sized to a desirable length. The agate pendant is two-fold; it appears like a luminous black eye on one side, and turns brown and white on the other. You can see the layered bands on the agate stone, which make this piece even more attractive. The pedant, which was once a brooch but since converted, measures 1-1/4 inches in diameter. The sterling silver necklace measures 25 inches around.
The necklace is originally from Scotland, where plenty of agate stone was found during the late 19th century. Queen Victoria made "pebble jewelry" or agate necklaces very popular after her vacations to Scotland. The agate came to be the souvenir stone of the Queen, and soon it became the fashionable stone all over the United Kingdom. This necklace is quite stunning, and is a perfect complement to any vintage outfit.
