Georgian Era 10K Rose Gold Hair Mourning Brooch & Locket
This mourning brooch from the Georgian era is an almost-octagonal oval made of 10 karat rose gold with woven hair under glass. The hair that is preserved under the original glass is smooth and wonderfully woven into four segments. The hair is a dark luscious brown, and in great condition for its age. This brooch dates to the 1790's; given its age and condition this is a rare piece of jewelry to find. It was made with special care, as is expected of mourning jewelry, which was made for remembrance of a loved one. Mourning jewelry was popular in the mid 1800's before photography became readily available; since portraits were expensive these alternative treasures were made to so one could carry a small part of their loved one on their body. The pin of the brooch is in perfect working condition. The brooch measures 1 inch x 3/4 of an inch and has a bale at the top so it can be worn also as a locket on a chain. The back of the brooch is marked with a cursive engraving in french: "votre bonheur m'interrefsera a jamais". This is a wonderful antique mourning hair brooch that would grace any collection.
