19th C. Floral Piqué Tortoise Shell Earrings
A gorgeous pair of piqué earrings made of gold, silver and tortoise shell. Piqué work is a type of decorative technique in which inlaid designs are created by means of small gold or silver pins. This art form reached its highest point in 17th- and 18th-century France. This pair of earrings features an intricate floral design, covering the two parts that make up the earring. There is a central bouquet, in the larger part of the earring, and on the second segment, the connecting piece, there is a lovely framed flower pattern that shows off the artist's talent for piqué work. The earrings themselves are a beautiful chunk of tortoise shell, hand picked for its varying colors and the visible tortoise shell patterning. There are tones of amber, red, brown and deep almost black tones. The earrings are in great condition and date to the 1880's. They have a romantic look, they are historical earrings as well as a wonderful piece of wearable art.
