This is an antique 18kt gold monocle in incredible condition! The monocle, a cousin to the lorgnette and pince-nez, first appeared in Great Britain around 1800. Custom-cut and often incorporating ivory or precious metals, monocles were incredibly expensive and soon became a status symbol. This working monocle contains a detailed floral handle. The piece is a little over 2 inches long. The glass is approximately 1 1/2 inches wide. The handle is kinetic and swivels the glass well. The piece is unmarked but has been tested and is 18k gold. This monocle weighs 12.25 grams. It would look wonderful hanging on a chain—a true statement piece! This is a truly special historic memento and would make an incredible addition to any collection.
