This is an incredible antique 9kt rose gold otter paw kilt pin. This piece is in immaculate condition—there is no damage and there has been little to no hair loss on the paw. Kilts have a long history dating back to the end of the 16th century. It is believed that kilt pins made there first appearance during the Victorian era. Though used for fastening the kilt, kilt pins were also regarded as jewelry. The use of animal parts became very fashionable with the popularity of hunting trips. Men saw their killings as prizes and would commemorate them by fashioning the animal parts into clothing or jewelry. After a successful hunt it was thought of as good luck to adorn oneself with the souvenirs collected. Today kilt pins are collected allover the world as vintage and antique jewelry. This particular pin features a C clasp—a hallmark of Victorian era jewelry. The top of the piece and crest on the foot are both 9kt rose gold. The top is also decorated with the initials “H M”. The pin is approximately 3 inches long and about 1 inch wide. This little piece of history is begging to be added to your collection!
