Taxco Mexican Sterling Silver Tortoise Shell Brooch
A Taxco, Mexican sterling silver and tortoise shell brooch. When placed to the light you can see the beautiful natural colors of the tortoise shell. It is made in the design of Enrique Ledesma, who was known for working with elegant stones and creating compositions with organic form and silver. This brooch has a TAXCO mark, and a 925- for sterling silver. There is also a maker's mark written on it, but I am not able to identify it. It is possibly an Enrique Ledesma, but not signed with his usual stamp. Or it could have been inspired by Ledesma's work. The brooch measures 2 inches tall by 1-1/4 inches and has a beautiful range of colors. The singular piece of tortoise shell is slightly curled and displays a range of reds, to deep browns, with slivers of amber color. Ledesma trained as a sculptor and worked for both William Spratling and Hector Aguilar before opening his own workshop in the 1950's. You can see his love for organic form and admiration of nature in the design of this brooch. This piece is circa 1960.
