18kt Gold Pietra Dura Brooch from Italy, circa 1880
This is a gorgeous Italian Pietra Dura (or hard stone) brooch made in Italy, circa 1880. Pietra Dura designs are different from mosaic stone jewelry because the thinly laid pieces of stone are polished to a shiny finish and are made of semi-precious stones. This stunning oval brooch is bezel set in 18kt yellow gold. Although the piece is unmarked, I have acid-tested it as 18kt gold. There is some beautiful gold work that features beading on the outside of the piece. This Pietra Dura piece is a fine example of this kind of jewelry that most often featured floral motifs and fine Italian craftsmanship. On this brooch we see flower petals made of marble, leaves made of jasper, and a background made of black marble. The brooch’s pin is in perfect working condition with a good range of motion. Despite it’s age this piece is incredibly sturdy. This oval brooch is approximately 2 1/2” long and approximately 2” wide. This piece weighs 18.80 grams. This piece is in wonderful condition for its age. This would make an unforgettable gift or fabulous addition to your antique jewelry collection!
