Georgian Saint Esprit Silver and Paste Necklace
This is an incredible silver and paste pendant from France, circa 1830. This stunning Georgian pendant hangs on a beautiful hand-made sterling silver chain from Mexico, circa 1950.
Paste has a rich and interesting history. Paste is glass which has been cut into gem-like forms. It was invented by Georges Frederic Strass (1701-1773) in 1730. Paste jewelry was popular from the 1700s up until the early 1900s. During this period, pastes were a desired material in themselves—not merely as a replacement for diamonds and gem stones. The 18th century was fondly known as the “Age of Paste” for their unparalleled popularity.
The design of the pendant is truly something special. The bale is finely decorated with hand-cut graduated paste stones. Below the bale is a lovely bow encircled by scrolling lines detailed with paste stones. Below the bow is a darling dove encrusted with paste stones. The dove in this piece is meant to symbolize Saint Esprit , or the Holy Spirit in Christianity. Doves are often used as a marker for the Holy Spirit in the Christian faith. The paste stones range in size, the largest is approximately 5.50 mm and the smallest is approximately 2.00 mm, the approximate average paste stone size is 2.80 mm. The striking pendant, from bale to tip, is approximately 2” long an approximately 1” wide at its widest point. This piece has a combined weight of approximately 11.70 grams.
The chain is well marked on the clasp, it contains a "925" stamp for sterling silver, as well as "Hecho En Mexico" stamp, and an eagle stamp. Laid flat, the chain is approximately 23” long. This length allows the pendant to hang beautifully below the neck.
