Rare Vintage Nepalese Sterling Silver Meditation Pendant and Chain
A beautiful and rare ethnic sterling silver pendant and chain, from Nepal, which features a meditational deity riding a lion. The pendant measures 2- 1/4 by 2-1/2 inches, has coral and turquoise accents on top, and from it hang beaded charms, which make a nice chime-like sounds when worn. The deity, perhaps Manjushri, is the bodhisattva that represents transcendental wisdom. The figure rides the lion to represent the use of wisdom to tame the mind, and he is holding various symbolic objects in his hands, representing the attainment of ultimate realization. Originally acquired in Nepal, it could be a Buddhist or Hindu figure that is represented on the pendant. Hinduism and Buddhism have shared religious traditions and many of the beliefs have common roots. The deity is framed with a lovely ornate design, curling lines of hand-made silver chasing and lots of hand work. The side silver panels on the pendant were soldered on. The chain is linked through three hooks that are decorated with coral and turquoise, all gems which are bold and bright in color. The chain measures approximate 32 inches and when worn the pendant hangs low. It weighs a total of 69 grams. The necklace is in great vintage condition, and most likely dates to 1920-1930. Possibly a meditation charm, this is a lovely piece of jewelry for rituals and special occasions.
