Victorian Banded Agate Intaglio 10KT Gold Necklace
A stunning rose-red and peach colored banded agate, carved with a hunting scene of a dog chasing a deer. This Scottish agate pendant is set into 7KT yellow gold and surrounded by a vibrant circle of mine cut paste diamonds, (diamond-simulants). The pendant dates to the 1860's, a time when pastes were an affordable cut-glass crystal that successfully imitated the look of diamonds. The level of craftsmanship that went into carving these crystals, as well as the intricately carved scene on the agate make this pendent a superb and rare item. The pendant hangs a the center of a 10KT yellow gold chain. The agate oval falls about 8 inches down, making the chain a total of 16 inches long. The agate measures 1 x 3/4 inch, and with the paste circle the oval pendant measures approximately 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inches in total.
Scotland was known for its agate stones; this was the stone of choice during the 19th century, when plenty of this precious stone could be found there. Queen Victoria made "pebble jewelry" or agate necklaces very popular after her vacations to Scotland. The agate came to be the souvenir stone of the Queen, and soon it became the fashionable stone all over the United Kingdom.
For centuries Agate has been used as a healing talisman and amulet. History tells us that agate stones were used by Neolithic people and that the Babylonians coveted agate for medicinal purposes as well as ornamentation. Agate is believed to have healing metaphysical properties. It is believed to promote strength, balance, and emotional healing. It is believed that this stone is particularly powerful when placed near the solar plexus, or third chakra.
