English Sterling Silver Locket with Image of Hindu Diety
A silver photo locket pendant with the image of Skanda surrounded by peacock and sea creature. A standard made of peacock feathers was used to indicate the presence of a 19th-century rajah, whose power is worldly. The back of the locket has the makers marks HW for Henry Walker, and is marked with an anchor for made in Birmingham; the F dates the sterling silver to 1880. Henry Walker was described as a "jeweller" in a 1881 census. This piece is quite special because although it was made in England, the imagery found on the pendant is of Indian origin. The chain is 26 inches long and the locket is 2 by 1 1/2 inches. The imagery of the god, with animals around him, is very detailed and sculpted. The locket is almost an inch deep.
