Val St. Lambert Cameo Glass Carved Orchid Box
This is a gorgeous cameo glass round carved box, made in Serainge, Belgium by Val St. Lambert in 1880. The body of the box is a translucent deep cranberry-colored glass (which is very difficult to achieve since it requires gold in its production) with a clear bottom. The lid is clear frosted glass with a carved cranberry-colored orchid on top. The carving to the top gives the orchid a beautiful depth and realism. This box could be used as a jewelry box or a vanity jar, or as a candy or bon bon dish. It is in remarkably good shape for its age, having only a few of the tiniest of flea bites.
Val St. Lambert was the first ever crystal maker in Belgium, beginning production in 1826. They were producing cameo glass before Gallè, and they most likely had a profound influence on him
This box measures 3" high and 5 7/8" in diameter. It is marked "Made in Belgium" and "Val St. Lambert."
