R. Lalique Tobago Glass Cendrier with Gray Patina Scarabs
This is a really fantastic René Lalique clear and frosted glass Tobago Cendrier with its original gray patina. It dates to 1928, when more abstract, angular forms were contrasted against the nature inspired organic motifs of the Art Nouveau era. A series of scarabs line to top of the cendrier, complementing the repeating motif of the leaves all along the edge. The cendrier measures 5 1/2 inches in diameter and approximately 1 inch high. It has a very nice patina and overall the condition of the piece is excellent, with minor scratched to the base. The cendrier could also be used for placing personal items, such as jewelry, and the interior space is 3 inches in diameter. It is hand engraved with the words R Lalique France, in script. Lalique was drawn to nature for inspiration and was an avid traveller as well as artist. In Ancient Egypt the scarab symbolized self-creation or rebirth; here Lalique takes the beetle fauna of the island of Tobago to make a beautiful art glass piece.
