Rene Lalique Opalescent Volute Shallow Plate
A remarkable René Lalique opalescent coupe ouvert plate of the Art Deco "Volute" design, made in 1934. At the height of his career in 1925, Lalique exhibited his works at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Moderns in Paris and with these came to define the Art Deco style. This blue-tinged semi-opaque glass with milky opalescence in its centre is typical of Lalique. The glass piece of undulating organic patterns resembles the suckers on an octopus tentacle, or a swirling galaxy. The plate glows beautifully when the light hits it; opalescent Lalique glass is amongst the most valued and sought-after pressed glass today. There are very few glass makers who produce opalescent glass today partly because of the level of technical difficulty, and because of the toxicity of some of the ingredients. In the center you can read the stenciled name of R. LALIQUE, FRANCE. This glass piece appears in the Catalog Raisonné on page 310, No. 10-396.
