Lush Iridescent Tiffany Favrile Glass Toothpick Holder
This is a wonderful little example of Favrile art glass from Louis Comfort Tiffany that dates back to the turn of the Century. It has a hand-made look, an organic toothpick holder or miniature vase with gold iridescent tones, and lush highlights of pink, violet, blue and purple. Its glass body is really vibrant, especially dramatic under direct sunlight. It is signed L.C.T. on the bottom with the number 02556. The condition is very good to excellent, with no chips and no wear to the Favrile surface. The vase measures 5.5 cm tall or a little over 2 inches, and at the mouth it measures 4cm wide, or 1.5 inches. "Favrile" glass was patented by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1894 . Tiffany’s believed that nature should be the primary source of design inspiration; his design and aesthetics show this conviction. This fascination with nature led Tiffany to the exploration of another technique—in 1893 Tiffany introduced his first blown-glass vases and bowls, called “Favrile.” The name, he declared, was taken from an old English word for hand made. Favrile glass quickly gained international renown for its surface iridescence and brilliant colors.
