Verlys Alpine Thistle Art Glass Vase
A very beautiful large French art glass vase, Verlys, in the "Alpine Thistle" pattern. It has large leafy buds in relief on a colorless ground, mixed with opulent thistle flowers. The vase is signed underfoot, by hand with "Verlys". The vase is made in France in the 1930s, during the height of the Art Deco period. Verlys glass originally comes from Rouen, France, known as the The Societe Holophane Francais who started making headlights for vehicles in the 1920s. By 1925 they had expanded into making art glass vases and bowls and established a department for these products, which they named Verlys. Initially they made blown vessels with several layers of glass, smooth on the outside with internal decoration.
This Alpine Thistle vase measures 9 inches high by 5 1/2 inches wide, at mouth. It is 6 inches at its widest. The vase weighs 6.5 lbs and is in perfect condition, no nicks or other wear. A beautiful decorative piece for a glass collection, or for a flower arrangement.
