Austrian Art Deco Cut Glass Pitcher with Bakelite Handle
Austrian Art Deco cut glass pitcher with bakelite handle. This large vessel was originally used for serving tea and lemonade in a prosperous Austrian household as its scale makes it perfect for large gatherings of family and friends. The substantial scale of the pitcher is highlighted with various cuts and angles to heighten the reflective quality of the glass. The sculptural shape of the handle is reminiscent of those seen originally in silver but in this pitcher the new material known as Bakelite, invented in the early twentieth century, has been used. In addition, the collar and lid (which may be easily lifted when pouring) is a silvered metal. The use of these three materials in one piece makes a visually intriguing impact as well as being eminently functional.
