Intricate Antique Burmese Repoussé Zodiac Box 950 Silver

WIDTH: 6 | HEIGHT: 3 | DEPTH: 4
Sold

An elegant and intricate 950 Silver oval box made with the hand-hammering technique known as repoussé. The box displays the various animals of the Burmese zodiac on its lid; these creatures are rendered in astonishing detail and are flanked by miniature birds in columns. The box has additional hand chasing work, and is a unique piece, every inch completely etched, to the smallest detailed pattern. On top of the lid sit two curious dog-like creatures; the artist has hand- etched the hairs and even the grinning teeth of these two dogs that stare at each other. The base of the box is equally remarkable. Again, the elements from the zodiac calendar appear, as well as Burmese dancing figures. It is a beautiful piece of silver art work, of superior quality than sterling. It measures 3 inches high by 4 wide by 6.5 inches long. It weighs 7.43 troy oz. It displays a hand-etched signature of the artist/Burmese handwriting on the bottom. circa 1890- 1910
