Tall Gothic Style Iron Lantern, Strasbourg, France c. 1895
A massive hand made Gothic style iron lantern removed from a meeting hall near Strasbourg France dating to c. 1895 with their original glass. Please notice the enormously tall size of this lantern and the appealing symmetry modeled after the famous Gothic cathedral windows of the fourteenth century. This lantern was constructed using individual pieces of iron in order to achieve its distinctive elongated shape. There are eight sides to the vertical body of the lantern and this is matched by the cons shaped top that has the eight flat pieces of sheet iron suspended from a large iron ring. The cone top has tripartite opening on every other slanted section to allow light to escape from the top. All eight of the vertical sides have a frame that extends from top to bottom with each join ending in an outward flare at the top and a flattened foot at the base. At the top section of each side there is an open framework with a Gothic arch. The original translucent glass remains inside the framework of the lantern and allows the maximum amount of light possible to provide illumination into the great hall where it was originally hanging. The metal framework inside the lantern has been rewired for American electricity and features four sockets for standard bulbs. The lantern has been fitted with chain for hanging.
