Grand Scale Limed Oak Chandelier, France c.1900
Grand Scale Limed Oak Chandelier, France c.1900. This enormous chandelier celebrates the pleasures of wine by incorporating a frieze around the entire perimetre carved with grape clusters and Bacchic figures. Constructed entirely of oak the chandelier features six standard bulb lights in order to cast a bright light throughout an interior. The circular shape begins at the top with a solid canopy that has six sloped supports attached to a ring at the top and bottom connected by six bobbin turned columns. The symmetry of the bobbins are in pleasing contrast to the swoop of the arms that extend outward to support the circular frieze ring. The open work carving alternates between figures shown in various poses of revelry and sections of grape clusters and leaves. Bacchus, the god of wine, is pleasingly evoked here with the motifs of figures and grapes and what is appealing is the subtle nature of the decorative detail. The high relief carving gives a wonderful sculptural appeal to the fixture while the grand scale enables the chandelier to be used in a wide range of spaces. As the oak has been finished with a whitening lime based finish it expresses a modern aesthetic because of its light, fresh appearance.
