Regence Style Iron and Brass Ten Light Chandelier, France c. 1920
Régence Style Iron and Brass Ten Light Chandelier, France c.1920. The geometric balance and symmetry combined with the fanciful equestrian motifs in this chandelier as well as the strong visual contrast between the dark iron and polished brass make this a very unique fixture. There are five sides to the chandelier defined by the wide iron bar at the base as well as the large scrolled iron arms that connect the domed top section to the five sided base. There are five pairs of double arms with each pair centred on each of the five sides fixed with an iron strap that extends along the width of the side. Springing forward between each pair of double arms is a bold equestrian figure in polished brass whose figurative shape is a handsome contrast to the iron framework. An interesting element of this chandelier is the set of five long brass finials placed at each of the five corners of the five sided base and the manner in which they visually balance the equestrian figures. The top of the chandelier is an unusual dome shape made of five separate arms with a decorative rim of brass cut in an alternating pattern of clubs and spades. The cascading shape of this fixture creates a wonderful profile and presents a great opportunity for a strong focal point in an interior.
