Timpani Drum Solid Copper Chandelier Fixture, France, circa 1900
This innovative light fixture used to be a timpani drum in a symphony orchestra. Here it has been turned upside down and suspended from a chain to form a most unusual vintage French chandelier. The hammered solid copper shows the passage of time from the numerous dents that give texture and definition to the surface and these variations also affected the tone produced when the timpani was struck by the mallet when it was used for music. The timpani retains the original tuning keys made of cast iron which are placed evenly around the perimeter of the drum bowl itself. The contrast between the rounded shape of the copper and the Industrial quality of the keys give the fixture an intriguing visual appeal. The copper chandelier has been wired to accept a standard base bulb as we have shown in the photographs. Of course the higher the wattage the brighter the light. When this vintage Industrial fixture is suspended above a table or in large interior the sheen of the copper and the directed light it produces create a striking focal point.
