Louis Philippe Style Gold Leaf and Rouge Mirror with Original Glass, France c.1880
A handsome antique Louis Philippe style gold leaf and rouge frame enclosing the original mirror glass from France c. 1880. This frame has the unusual feature of being a luminous shade of reddish orange as a result of the passage of time that has weathered the gold leaf. The rouge is the undercoat before the gold leaf is applied by hand and the warmth of the colouration in this frame is most striking. traces of the original gilding remain in the frame and provide a lovely gleam. Surrounding the original mirror glass with its distinctive bubbles, speckles and depth is a slender ribbon of beading known in France as "les perles". Because this ribbon resembles the delicacy of a strand of natural pearls which, until the invention of cultured pearls, was known the world over as being the privilege of the wealthy to acquire and possess, always symbolized rarity and luxury. this motif has always been a visual shorthand for this meaning. Directly adjacent to the beading is a concave section of the frame highlighted with a reflective band of cream coloured paint. The contrast between the intensity of the red orange against the cream and mirror is quite engaging and gives this nineteenth century piece an especial appeal.
