Hand made window frame with the original stunning blue painted finish from Sweden c. 1850 now enclosing an antiqued mirror. This handsome wooden window frame retains the original applied decorative elements that give it a uniquely sculptural impact. Besides the gorgeous blue colour of the paint seen all over the surface the original artisan chose a chalky white colour to use for contrast on many of the raised decorative sections. The decoration of the exterior of houses throughout Scandinavia is a time honoured tradition and a way to ward off the bleak chill of the long and dark winter months. Brilliant colours were always employed that were easily visible from a distance and there was an awareness and insistence on balance and symmetry as a way to augment the beautiful appearance that the painted and carved elements created together. The rectangular shape of this frame is emphasized by the handsome and boldly scaled moulding seen at the top. The horizontal ridges seen in the three evenly spaced sections have been achieved by stacking individual pieces of wood as well as having the uppermost pieces stand farther away from the frame than the lower pieces to give a sense of movement. The upper enclosed section of the frame uses the motif of a half moon along with a divided crescent split by an inverted finial and enhances their raised profile by painting them in the lighter colour. The horizontal line of wood beneath this section is also painted in contrast but also is cut with a repetitive series of vertical grooves to resemble dentil moulding. The left and right sides of the frame match in appearance and have an upward and downward pointing finial at the top and bottom. These motifs are raised from the surface of the frame without any contrasting colour and rely on their sculptural shape to heighten their appearance. Between these finials in the centre of each side is a double kite shape with the upper side of the motif being inverted over the lower. This is painted in the chalk white in order to be a focal point and emphasize the symmetry of the placement of the design. The bottom of the frame is centred on a square medallion with two horizontal lozenges on the left and the right with a smaller diamond shaped piece in the lower corners. Please use the zoom feature to see the difference in the intensity of the painted finish as it is more vibrant at the top and gently fades toward the bottom. This is due to the inclement weather and harsh conditions as the icy snow wore the paint away more rapidly on the lower section than the upper section that was protected by the eave of the house. Because the paint that was originally used for exterior and interior decoration was made from natural and organic materials it had to be refreshed on a regular basis. The beauty of this frame is that the paint remains in its original and unretouched condition. This is an artifact from an earlier age that retains its potent sculptural appeal and will be a compelling focal point when hanging on the wall of a modern home. The frame has ben fitted with an antiques mirror chosen to simulate the effect of great age on the mirror glass. By placeing this contemporary mirror within an antique frame the entire piece becomes both striking and useful.
